USLE Factor Reference Guide

The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) is A = R × K × LS × C × P. Use the values below as a general guide for US inputs.

R Factor (Rainfall)
Measure of rainfall erosivity.
• 20-50: Western US (Dry)
• 150-250: Midwest
• 300+: Southeast US (High)
K Factor (Soil Erodibility)
Inherent susceptibility of soil to erode.
• 0.05-0.15: Clay (Resistant)
• 0.25-0.4: Silt Loam (Moderate)
• 0.4+: Silt (High Susceptibility)
LS Factor (Length/Slope)
Combined effect of slope length and steepness.
• < 0.5: Flat / Short Slopes
• 1.0 - 3.0: Moderate Construction Slopes
• 5.0+: Steep Embankments
C Factor (Cover)
Effect of plants/mulch.
• 1.0: Bare Soil (Worst Case)
• 0.05: Mulch / Temporary Seeding
• 0.005: Established Grass/Sod
P Factor (Practice)
Support practices.
• 1.0: No support practices
• 0.5: Contouring
• 0.1-0.2: Terracing

Threshold Settings

Soil loss above this value will be flagged as High Risk.
