Pool Chemical Calculator

Free Chlorine (FC)

Note: Dichlor and Trichlor also add Cyanuric Acid (CYA). Cal-Hypo adds Calcium Hardness.

pH Adjustment

(Required for estimation)
pH calculations are estimates; TA level significantly impacts results. Add acid/base slowly, retest often. Never add acid and chlorine together. Add acid to water, not water to acid.

Total Alkalinity (TA)

Ensure target TA > current TA. To lower TA: Use pH Decreaser (acid) to lower pH significantly (e.g., to 7.0-7.2), aerate the water (waterfall, fountain, pointing jets up) to raise pH without raising TA, repeat as needed.

Calcium Hardness (CH)

Ensure target CH > current CH. Pre-dissolve Calcium Chloride in a bucket of pool water before adding (solution gets hot!). To lower CH: Partial drain and refill with softer water.

Cyanuric Acid (CYA) / Stabilizer

Ensure target CYA > current CYA. Dissolve granular CYA slowly in a skimmer sock or bucket of warm water before adding. Takes days to fully register on tests. To lower CYA: Partial drain and refill.

Salt (for Salt Water Generators)

Add salt directly to pool water, away from skimmer/drain. Brush to help dissolve. Check SWG manual for ideal range (often 3000-4000 ppm).
