Overland Border Crossing Checklist
Your Essential Guide for a Smooth Journey on the Road
I. Essential Documents
- Passport & Visas: At least 6 months validity on passport. Check visa requirements for the destination country and any transit countries.
- Vehicle Registration: Original document is mandatory.
- Driver's License & IDP: Your national license and an International Driving Permit (IDP) if required.
- Vehicle Insurance: Proof of insurance valid for the destination country (e.g., Green Card in Europe, or local third-party insurance purchased at the border).
- Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD): If required for your vehicle. This is a customs document that guarantees you will re-export your vehicle.
- Letter of Authorization: If you are driving a vehicle registered in someone else's name.
- Physical & Digital Copies: Have photocopies of all documents and digital copies saved offline on your phone or cloud storage.
II. Vehicle Preparation
- Full Service: Check oil, brakes, tires, and fluids. Ensure the vehicle is in excellent mechanical condition.
- Required Equipment: Research and pack any legally required items for the destination (e.g., warning triangle, high-visibility vest, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher).
- Country Identifier Sticker: Display the correct sticker (e.g., 'USA', 'GB') on the rear of your vehicle.
- Clean Vehicle: A clean and tidy car can sometimes make for a smoother inspection process. Remove any unnecessary clutter.
III. Personal Items & Finances
- Local Currency: Have a small amount of the destination country's currency in cash for initial fees, tolls, or purchases.
- Credit/Debit Cards: Inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid blocked cards.
- Customs Declaration: Be aware of what you need to declare (e.g., large amounts of cash, specific goods). Check the destination's customs website beforehand.
