What is Hyperventilation?
Hyperventilation, or over-breathing, is a condition where you start to breathe very fast. This rapid breathing causes the level of carbon dioxide in your blood to drop too low, which can lead to the symptoms you may have experienced.
Common Triggers
It's often triggered by anxiety, panic, stress, or fear. However, it can also be caused by physical factors like strenuous exercise, fever, or certain medical conditions.
What To Do During an Episode
- Focus on your breathing: Try to slow your breathing down. Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and breathe out through your mouth for 6 seconds.
- Breathe through pursed lips: As if you were whistling. This helps slow down your breathing and increase carbon dioxide levels.
- Find a quiet, calm space: Remove yourself from stressful situations if possible.
- Seek reassurance: Talk to someone you trust. Knowing you're not alone can be very calming.
