Common DRM Technologies

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a set of access control technologies for restricting the use of proprietary hardware and copyrighted works. Here are the most common systems for video streaming:

Google Widevine

Used by Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Android devices. It's often found in MPEG-DASH streams (with `.mpd` manifests).

Microsoft PlayReady

Developed by Microsoft and used in Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and various smart TVs and set-top boxes. It is also commonly used with MPEG-DASH streams.

Apple FairPlay

Apple's DRM technology, exclusively used for content delivered via HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) on Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TV.
