About Blockchain Hashing
Cryptographic hashing is the backbone of blockchain immutability. It transforms any input data into a fixed-size string of characters.
Key Algorithms
- SHA-256: Used by Bitcoin. It produces a 256-bit (64 character hex) hash. Even a slight change in input changes the output completely (Avalanche Effect).
- Keccak-256: Used by Ethereum. It is the original version of SHA-3 but with different padding parameters.
- RIPEMD-160: Used in Bitcoin address generation (after SHA-256) to create shorter addresses.
What is Mining?
In Proof-of-Work (like Bitcoin), miners compete to find a numeric value called a Nonce. When this Nonce is combined with the block data and hashed, the resulting hash must start with a specific number of zeros (the Difficulty).
