Understanding Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is the commitment to honest and ethical behavior in all academic matters. It means valuing learning and original thought, and giving credit where it is due. Breaches of academic integrity, such as plagiarism, undermine the value of education for everyone.
What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgment. This can be intentional or unintentional.
Examples include:
- Copying text word-for-word without using quotation marks and a citation.
- Paraphrasing someone else's idea without citing the original source.
- Submitting work done by another person as your own.
- Using images, data, or charts without acknowledging the creator.
This tool is a first-level check to help you spot potential unintentional plagiarism. Always ensure you are correctly citing all your sources according to your institution's guidelines.
